We all need to cut grass, the grass keeps growing, some of us enjoy it, most of us just want to get it done. Starts getting emotional, when your neighbors, walking their dog, steer at you weird, because your grass is so tall, it looks like hay.
The GO TO grass cutting machine, commonly found at homes all across America, to mow the lawn. Some push lawnmowers can walk for you or ‘self-propel’. Most push lawnmowers are powered by a one cylinder gas small engine. The cutting blade is attached directly to the crankshaft of the engine with a blade adapter. The blade is also the counterweight for the engine. The blade is the most important serviceable part of a push lawnmower. If the blade is dull, worn, bent or all three, the engine will not run correctly.

A push mower’s gas small engine usually operates, turns on and off, by handle bar lever and brake cable, releasing a brake. The engine also powers the push mower’s ‘self-propel’ drive transmission, using a belt and blade adapter, with a drive pulley. Drive is engaged, and speed is controlled, with a clutch cable, from handle bar control. The brake cable, drive belt, blade adapter, drive pulley, and clutch cable are serviceable parts that require replacement every few years. The underside of the mower needs to be clear of obstructions and debris buildup; for cables and belts to operate correctly; and for air flow, to lift and cut the grass, then mulch, bag or discharge the clippings.
If the brake lever is limp and moves freely then, most likely, the brake cable failed and requires replacement.
If the mower stops walking then, most likely, the traction belt and drive pulley require replacement.
If you hit something, like a rock or stump then, most likely, the blade and blade adapter require replacement. If you pull the starter rope, and it kicks back, pulling your arm off then, most likely, the flywheel key is sheared too, also requiring replacement.
